July 7 London bombing 999 call heard
A 999 call made to emergency services during the July 7 bomb attacks in London has been heard in public for the first time.
The call was replayed during a meeting of the London Assembly committee, which is reviewing the handling of the attacks. The caller, who was at the scene of the Tavistock Square bombing, described the carnage, saying that there were “people lying on the ground”. The caller said: “There’s a London bus – it’s a 30, I think. There are people trying to get out. I think there’s ambulances on the way, but there’s people dead.”
London Underground bosses and the heads of the capital’s emergency services will appear before the committee to answer questions about their work.
On Thursday, Tim O’Toole, London Underground’s Managing Director, said that emergency services had put in a “remarkable effort” on July 7.
Mr O’Toole said that it was initially believed that the three Tube explosions, which took place at 08:51, were caused by power surges. However, by 09:20, the message had been changed to a “network emergency”.
However, Mr O’Toole said that the underground radio network, used in the underground system was “antiquated” and had been badly affected by the explosions, causing communication difficulties.
The committee is due to publish its report in Spring 2006.
