Soldier killed in Afghanistan named
The Ministry of Defence has named the British soldier killed in a gun attack in Afghanistan at the weekend.
Lance Corporal Steven Sherwood, 23, from Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, was killed in an ambush in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan on Saturday. Five others were also injured in the attack.
L/Cpl Sherwood had joined the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry in June 1999 and served in Northern Ireland, Belize, Jamaica, Norway, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
The dead man’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Welch, described him as a “thoroughly professional and dedicated soldier”. He said that L/Cpl Sherwood – also known as ‘Shirley’ – was renowned for his sense of humour. He said: “He will be remembered by all as a good mate who would never leave a friend and could be counted on to cover his buddies’ backs, in the finest traditions of his regiment.
“He will be sorely missed by so many of the regiment who regarded him as a close friend.”
