London bombings ‘suspect’ charged
A man arrested last weekend in connection with the July 7 London bombings has been charged with wasting police time.
Imran Patel, 27, from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was arrested last Saturday, on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.
The arrest followed a tip-off from the ‘News of the World’. It was reported that Mr Patel had told journalist Mazher Mahmood that he had information about the bomb attacks.
However, Metropolitan Police confirmed that Mr Patel had now been charged with wasting police time. They said he had been charged with “the wasteful employment of the police by knowingly making to Mazher Mahmood a false report tending to show that he had information material to a police inquiry.”
Mr Patel is due to appear before Leeds Magistrates Court, charged with the offence, which is alleged to have taken place in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire earlier this month.
Fifty-two people were killed in four explosions – three on Tube trains and one on a bus – in the capital on July 7. The bombers – Mohammad Sadique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer, Jermaine Lindsay and Hasib Hussain – also died in the attacks.
Several other people have been arrested in connection with the bombings, but no one has been charged.
