Daniel Craig confirmed as James Bond
Daniel Craig has been confirmed as the new James Bond, today.
Craig, 37, will take over from Pierce Brosnan, 52, to star in the next Bond movie, ‘Casino Royale’, which will be the 21st in the long-running franchise.
The announcement was made at a press conference in London, where Craig arrived by speedboat.
Craig first major role was in the BBC 2 drama ‘Our Friends in the North’, before he moved into films. His breakthrough role was as Paul Newman’s son in Sam Mendes’ gangster drama ‘Road To Perdition’ and followed it up with roles in ‘Sylvia’, playing poet Ted Hughes and ‘The Mother’. He headlined the well-received British gangster drama ‘Layer Cake’ earlier this year and will next be seen in Stephen Spielberg’s ‘Munich’, about the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics.
A number of other actors were considered for the role of Bond, including Clive Owen, Ewan MacGregor, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana and Colin Farrell.
Craig will become the sixth actor to play the iconic spy, following in the footsteps of Sir Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Sir Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan.
Casino Royale is the first of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books. An unofficial spoof movie version was made in the late sixties, starring David Niven as Bond.
Director Martin Campbell said that the new version of Casino Royal would be grittier and more realistic, while screenwriter Paul Haggis said that the film would be less reliant on Bond’s previous trademark gadgets.
Casino Royal is due to begin filming in January.
