Schoolboy dies in E.coli outbreak
A five-year-old boy has died after contracting E.coli in the outbreak in South Wales.
Mason Jones, from Deri, near Bargoed, died in Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he was being treated, on Monday evening.
The schoolboy attended Deri Primary School.
One of the children who was admitted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool during the outbreak has now been discharged. A spokesperson said that two remaining children were now in a “stable” condition.
The E.coli outbreak in the area, has affected 161 people – mainly children – and 38 schools, since it was first identified in mid-September.
A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council said that the local authority was continuing to work with the outbreak control team and was supporting the investigation into the outbreak.
Welsh Assembly Children’s Minister Jane Hutt expressed her sadness over Mason Jones’ death and said it was “a very sad and sobering moment”.
Ms Hutt said that a committee would look into the terms of reference for a “no holds barred” inquiry on the outbreak to ensure “that this never happens again to our children in Wales”.
Investigations into the source of the outbreak are continuing.
