Parliament roof protestor arrested
A Fathers 4 Justice campaigner who staged a protest at Westminster on Tuesday has been arrested.
Guy Harrison, 37, spent five hours on the roof of Westminster Hall, after breaching security during a tour of the Houses of Parliament.
Mr Harrison, who was fined last year for the powder-bomb attack on Prime Minister Tony Blair in the Commons, unfurled a banner reading ‘Does Blair Care?’
He eventually came down from the roof at around 8.00pm on Tuesday, and was then arrested for aggravated trespass. He is being questioned at a central London police station.
Mr Harrison, who is from Sussex, said that he carried out the protest for his seven-year-old daughter, who he has not seen for more than four years.
Fathers 4 Justice leader Matt O’Connor said the protest had been staged “to highlight the fact that they (the government) are not addressing the issues” and had been timed to coincide with Mr Blair’s speech at the Labour party conference in Brighton.
Mr O’Connor said that Mr Harrison and another man had gone into the main entrance of the House of Parliament and taken a tour of the building.
He said: “It’s a bit of a surprise because we thought obviously he would be a familiar face to them from last year. They just walked into the main door, climbed out of a window, shinned down the drainpipe and he basically climbed on top of the roof.”
Mr O’Connor added: “Obviously, security was… a bit lax to put it mildly.”
The protest, the latest in a series of high profile protests by the Fathers 4 Justice group, has prompted fresh calls for a security review at Westminster.
