Two soldiers arrested in Iraq
Two British soldiers are understood to have been arrested in Iraq, over allegations that they opened fire on police in Basra in southern Iraq.
According to reports, a senior Iraqi official claimed that the British military told him that the soldiers were undercover. He said that they had been wearing civilian clothes and were driving a civilian car.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that two soldiers have been detained by Iraqi authorities, but have refused to comment on whether the soldiers were working undercover. A spokesperson said that the reason for their arrest was not yet known.
It was also reported that British soldiers clashed with protestors following the arrests. It is understood that two British tanks were set on fire by the crowd, who also threw stones at the soldiers, forcing the troops to fire warning shots.
The situation in Basra, which is under British military control, has been worsening over recent months.
Three British soldiers have been killed in roadside bombs this month – two on September 5 and one on September 11.
