Explosion hits British embassy in Croatia

There has been a small explosion in the UK embassy in Croatia.

The device, believed to be a letter bomb, exploded in the mail room of the embassy in the capital, Zagreb, around 06:30 BST.

One person, a Croatian member of staff, was slightly injured in the blast.

Security has now been stepped up around the embassy and an investigation into the blast is under way.

The Foreign Office confirmed that the ambassador, John Ramsden, was at the embassy as the investigation began.

The motivation for the blast is unclear. However, Croatia’s Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told reporters that the incident might be linked to the country’s bid to join the European Union.

Talks over Croatia’s entry to the EU had broken down earlier this year, because of its failure to comply with the United Nations war crimes tribunal.

Two other attacks were caied out on British embassies earlier this year. In May, two bombs, described as ‘makeshift grenades, exploded outside the building housing the British Consulate in Manhattan, New York, coinciding with the General Election in the UK.

Last month, the British Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia was evacuated after a suspicious package was mailed there.
