Second woman arrested in baby fire death case

Police have confirmed that a second woman has been arrested, following the death of a baby in a house fire in Newcastle at the weekend.

Northumbria police confirmed that a 21-year-old Newcastle woman had been arrested on Wednesday morning on suspicion of the murder of four-month-old Alexander Gallon on Sunday night.

There have been reports that the woman arrested is the baby’s mother, Danielle Wails, but police have not released any more details about the arrest.

Another woman, in her early twenties, was arrested and bailed by police on Tuesday, in connection with the fire.

Miss Wails, 21, told police that two men entered her house, in Cowgate, around 10:30pm on Sunday evening. She said that she was in the kitchen and the men kicked and punched her and she passed out. When she came round, Miss Wails said that she found herself in the living room, where her son Alexander was, and her hands had been tied with telephone cord. The room has also been set on fire.

Miss Wails told police that she screamed for help, but neighbours were unable to break down the door. She claimed to have contacted emergency services, by dialling 999 with her tongue.

Firefighters were able to rescue both Danielle and Alexander and they were taken to Newcastle General Hospital. Danielle suffered superficial injuries in the attack, but Alexander died in hospital. A post-mortem carried out on Tuesday revealed that he died as a result of the fire. Further forensic tests are due to be carried out.

Police said that they had CCTV footage of two men seen in the area just before the fire broke out on Sunday. Police have urged the men, who were spotted on the corner of Link Road and Whitehorn Crescent around 10:30pm on Sunday night, to come forward.

Miss Wails and Alexander had lived at the Link Road property for just two weeks before the fire. The house is leased by a Catholic charity, St Cuthbert’s Care, which helps young single mother with parenting skills.

Alexander’s father, Robert Gallon, 21, is understood to have been questioned by police yesterday. Mr Gallon, who did not live with Miss Wails, but was in regular contact with his son, is reported to be distraught at his death.
