Six-year-old girl survives 150ft cliff fall
A six-year-old girl has survived a 150ft fall from a cliff top, miraculously escaping with only minor injuries.
Humber Coastguard were alerted shortly after 5:30pm on Thursday evening, following reports that a girl had fallen down a cliff at Filey in Yorkshire, next to the Blue Dolphin Caravan Park. Filey inshore lifeboat and Scarborough Coastguard Rescue Team were both sent to the scene, where the six-year-old was found unconscious with a head injury in an area called Chimney Hole.
The girl’s mother, who had reported the incident, described seeing her daughter fall down the cliff. Her husband had climbed down the cliff to be with his daughter.
The family are believed to have been staying at the caravan park, when the accident happened.
The girl was flown to Scarborough Hospital by a rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield. It is reported that the girl has regained consciousness.
Coastguard Mark Clark told the BBC that they understood that girl suffered only bumps and bruises in the fall.
Commenting on the accident. Mike Puplett, Watch Manager at Humber Coastguard said: "This accident demonstrates the need for constant vigilance when near to cliff edges. Whilst the views in this location are magnificent they are better viewed from a safe distance. Unfortunately the family will remember their holiday at Filey for all the wrong reasons.
"Whilst the father's actions are entirely understandable we would caution against taking such risks with the potential for a second casualty. We wish this young girl a speedy recovery," he added.
