Two in court over Walker murder

Two men appeared in court on Friday, charged with the murder of black teenager Anthony Walker last week.

Paul Taylor, 20, from Elizabeth Road in Huyton, Liverpool, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Knowsley Magistrates in Huyton on Friday morning, charged with murder and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

They were remanded in custody to appear before Liverpool Crown Court on August 23.

Anthony’s mother, Gee Walker, and other family members attended today’s hearing.

Anthony Walker, 18, was attacked as he walked through McGoldrick Park in Merseyside, with his girlfriend, who is white, and his 17-year-old cousin, last Friday night. He died in the early hours of Saturday morning, after sustaining head injuries following an attack with an axe.

A third man, aged 23, who was arrested yesterday has been released on bail. Four other men, aged 17, 18, 26 and 29 have also been released on bail, pending further inquiries.

A candlelit vigil in memorial of Anthony Walker is to be held on Friday evening at St Gabriel’s Church, in Huyton, followed by a procession to McGoldrick Park.
