Government launches consultation on health research strategy

The Department of Health has launched a consultation on proposals for a new modernised National Health Research Strategy.

Health Minister Jane Kennedy said: “We want to create a health research system in which the NHS supports outstanding individuals, working in world-class facilities, conducting leading-edge research, focused on the needs of patients and the public.”

The proposals include plans to modernise the way research in the NHS is funded; establish a set of Academic Medical Centres; and create a National Institute for Health Research – a virtual institute, which would work with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration to co-ordinate the research infrastructure of the NHS.

Ms Kennedy said that the new system would focus on “quality, transparency and value for money” and said that the new changes would be “radical”. “However, we believe that they are essential to create a health research system in which the NHS support ensures the UK is the best place in the world for health research," the Minister added.

The proposed strategy was developed in association with research professionals and organisations. The government is seeking views from the wider research community and associated organisations on the proposals.

The web-based consultation will run for 12 weeks, closing on October 2005.
