UK visits abroad on the increase

Visits abroad by UK residents rose by 6% during the 12 months ending May 2005, to 65.5 million, according to figures published today by the Office for National Statistics.

Visits to Western Europe increased by 2% (at 49.9 million), North America increased by 17% (to 5.1 million) and to other parts of the world by 23% (to 10.6 million).

Over the same period, visits by overseas residents to the UK also rose, by 11%, to 29 million. There was also an increase in visits from residents of Western Europe by 9% (to 18.7 million), from North America by 2% (to 4.3 million) and from other parts of the world by 23% (to 6 million).

During March to May 2005, there were 7.6 million visits to the UK by overseas residents - a decrease of 1% when compared with the previous three months. Spending also decreased by 5% to £3.5 billion.

Over the same period, the number of visits overseas by UK residents fell by 3% to 16.5 million, while the associated spending decreased by 1% to £8.1 billion.

UK travel figures on the rise
UK residents are continuing to travel further afield compared with a year ago, new figures have revealed.
