Teenager held over ‘bicycle murder’

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder, following the death of a man who was apparently beaten up for his old bicycle.

Ian Corfield, 42, was attacked by a gang of men outside a newsagent’s in Higher Broughton in Salford, last week.

Mr Corfield, who had been living in a hostel for the homeless, was knocked down and kicked repeatedly by a gang, which reportedly consisted of white men aged between 16 and 25.

One of the men picked up the bike and threw it on top of Mr Corfield during the attack.

One of the attackers then stole Mr Corfield’s bike as he lay on the ground, while the rest of the gang fled the scene by car.

The bike, which had a black frame and silver bullhorn style handlebars, was described as old and was said to be practically worthless.

Mr Corfield was taken to hospital, where he was treated for head injuries. He was discharged the following day, but returned to hospital at the weekend when his condition deteriorated. He died on Sunday. A post-mortem revealed that he died from a head injury.

Detective Chief Inspector David Law said the attack was now being treated as a murder investigation. He said: “The motive for this attack appears to have been the theft of a bicycle that is believed to be worth next to nothing. This was an unprovoked attack on a man as he went about his daily business.”
