Out-of-court settlement over stillborn baby left on shelf
A £10,000 out-of-court settlement has been reached with a couple whose stillborn baby was left on a self in a hospital self for three days.
Lexie Cooper had been delivered by caesarean section at St Thomas' Hospital in London in September 2003.
However, Steve Cooper discovered that Lexie's body had been left for three days on the shelf in the corridor adjacent to his wife Lisa's room.
It emerged that, despite Mr Cooper being given assurances by hospital staff that Lexie's body would be removed to the hospital morgue, as Mrs Cooper was discharged from hospital three days later she had to go the cupboard to say her final farewells to her child.
In a statement Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust said that it had investigated the incident and had met with and submitted the finding of the report to the family in November 2003 when an apology was made to the baby's parents over the incident.
A number of changes to the procedures at the hospital's Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Suite were subsequently implemented.
