Five injured and one killed in crash at level crossing
The driver of a car was killed when a train hit a car at a level crossing near the village of Rawcliffe Bridge near Goole in Yorkshire.
Five train passengers were also injured.
The accident occured at an unmanned level crossing just before 6.30pm on Thursday.
Three of the injured were taken to Hull Royal Infirmary with suspected spinal injuries, two other people were treated for more minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was killed in the crash when it was struck by the two-carriage train.
A train was used to ferry the passengers back to Doncaster from the remote location where the crash occured.
British Transport Police are to conduct an investigation into the fatal crash in which the car was dragged down the track over 100 metres by the train.
Police confirmed that the unmanned crossing was of a type that required vechile drivers to open and close gates. There is no indication of an approaching train at the crossing, and police said that a preliminary examination had revealed no malfunction in the manually operated gate mechanisms.
The incident occured a few miles from the scene of the 2001 Selby rail disaster in which ten people were killed when a collision with a vehicle on the line caused the derailment of an express train into the path of an oncoming goods train.
