British Airways announces ticket price rises
British Airways (BA) has announced an increase in fuel surcharge on ticket prices, due to increasing oil price rises.
The longhaul fuel surcharge will increase to £48 per return trip, while the surcharge for shorthaul flights will rise to £16 for a return trip, for all tickets purchased from June 27.
Martin George, British Airways’ commercial director, said: “The continuing rise in global oil prices to almost US$60 a barrel means a further surcharge increase is regrettably unavoidable. We now expect our fuel bill for this financial year to be around £1.6 billion.
“Our estimated fuel bill for this year will now be more than £450 million higher than our fuel costs last year. This additional fuel surcharge will help to offset the recent sharp increases in the price of fuel.”
BA first introduced fuel surcharges last May and this latest rise is the fourth time the airline has increased the charges since then.
The decision follows last month’s announcement of a £415 million profit for the company.
BA said that it expected its total revenue for the year to March 2006 to improve by 4.5 – 5.5% up from the 4 – 5% figure issued at the airline’s full year results last month, due to the impact of these latest fuel surcharges.
