Bashir may face legal action
British journalist Martin Bashir could face legal action over a controversial Michael Jackson documentary, following the pop superstar’s acquittal from child abuse charges.
The 46-year-old pop star initially launched legal proceedings against Mr Bashir and Granada television for alleged breach of contact following the broadcast of the ‘Living With Michael Jackson’ documentary, which was broadcast in 2003.
During the documentary, Michael Jackson revealed that he shared his bed with young boys, and sparked a criminal investigation, which culminated in the star facing charges of child molestation.
The legal action was put on hold while Mr Jackson went on trial, facing charges of conspiracy to kidnap and providing alcohol to minors, as well as child abuse charges. However, the jury cleared him of all charges on Monday, following a sixteen-week trial in Santa Maria, California.
The singer’s lawyers could now reopen proceedings against Mr Bashir, who now works for ABC News in New York, and Granada.
Mr Bashir could also face charges of contempt of court, for refusing to answer questions during the Jackson trial.
An ITV spokesperson said that they were waiting to hear from Mr Jackson’s lawyers.
