Reid pledges assistance for Darfur
Defence Secretary John Reid has announced details of a military assistance package to help assist the African Union peacekeeping mission in the troubled Darfur region in Sudan.
Fifteen personnel from the Royal Air Force’s Mobile Air Movements Team are likely to be deployed to Naironi, Kenya, to assist NATO efforts to coordinate and enable the airlift of additional battalions of African Union (AU) troops.
Two logisitics experts will also be deployed to help the EU’s assistance programme, which helps to ensure that the troops are able to sustain their support infrastructure in the sub-Saharan conditions. The officers are expected to servce with the African Union’s forward headquarters in El Fashir, Sudan.
A UK officer, currently serving in European Airlift Centre at Eindhoven, is also to be deployed to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in order to assist the air movement of the expanded mission of the AU, EU and NATO contributions.
The announcement follows Britain’s pledge of £6.6 million at the International Donor’s Conference in Addis Ababa on last month. The funds will provide additional vehicles, equipment and shelters, as well as help to support civilian policing.
Announcing the military assistance today, Mr Reid said: “I am greatly heartened to see NATO and the EU working closely together to provide real, practical assistance to the African Union’s mission to end the suffering in Darfur. The UK has an important role to play in this and I am very pleased to be able to offer this assistance.”
