Flaming June has cold nights in store

According to the Met Office, Benson in Oxfordshire experienced its lowest June temperature ever recorded on Monday night.

As temperatures plunged below freezing in many parts of central England, the Met Office at RAF Benson recorded a temperature of -0.3 °C, beating the previous low of 0.0 °C recorded in 1962.

The night's lowest temperature of -1.1 °C was recorded at Aboyne in Scotland. In contrast, minimum temperatures in Cornwall and Anglesey were above 10 °C.

Although both are still a long way from the all-time lowest June temperatures for the UK - in 1956, Dalwhinnie in Scotland and in 1962 Santon Downham in Norfolk recorded -5.6 °C. The last particularly cold spell in June was in 2001 when minimum temperatures fell to -3 °C in many parts of Scotland.

The Met Office's forecasters say that with high pressure set to dominate the UK weather over the next few days, the pattern of chilly nights is likely to continue.

However, plenty of sunshine is forecast during the day and minimum temperatures are not expected to dip as low as those on Monday night.
