Specialist team in hunt for missing baby
A team of specialist police officers have been brought in to assist in the search for a newborn baby, believed to have been abducted in west London.
The baby, whose gender is unknown, was apparently abandoned outside a social services office on Friday. Thought to be only days or weeks old and of black or mixed race, the baby was discovered by a 14-year-old girl. However, before the girl could report the incident, a woman allegedly drove up and, upon discovering the child did not belong to the girl, offered to help the girl, but placed the child in her car and drove off.
Police are treating the incident as “serious or sinister” because there have been no subsequent reports of a baby being handed into hospitals, doctors or child care agencies. They are concerned both for the welfare of the baby and the baby’s mother.
A team from the Metropolitan Police’s specialist crimes directorate has been brought in to help with the investigation today.
A description has been issued of the woman who drove off with the baby. In her late 20s or early 30s, the woman was described as 5ft 8ins tall with curly shoulder length hair and was wearing a light coloured top and black trousers.
A ‘baby on board’ sticker was also reported to be on her car.
