Children questioned about attempted murder

A fifth child has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a five-year-old boy suffered neck injuries in West Yorkshire.

Four other children – two girls aged 12 and 11 and two boys, also aged 12 and 11 – are also in custody and are being questioned about the incident.

One of the children was arrested on Tuesday night, while the others were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The fifth child was arrested later on Wednesday.

West Yorkshire police believe that the five-year-old, who is from Chickenley, was injured in woods behind the Earlsheaton Medical Centre. He is currently being treated at Dewsbury and District Hospital where his condition is described as being stable.

Police have refused to comment on whether the boy’s injuries were sustained in an attempted hanging.

A forensic examination has been carried out in the area where the attack is believed to have taken place.
