Man questioned over Witchalls case takes overdose
A man questioned in relation to the stabbing of Abigail Witchalls has died from what is thought to be a drug overdose.
Surrey Police confirmed that 23-year-old Richard Cazaly had died in hospital in Scotland.
Mr Cazaly, a gardener who lived a short distance from where the attack occurred, had been questioned by police before he left for Scotland.
Abigail Witchalls, the young mother who was stabbed in the neck in a horrific attack, remains paralysed and is being treated in a specialist spinal injuries unit.
She was attacked while returning home from a mother and toddler meeting in Little Bookham, Surrey, with her 21-month-old son Joseph. The attacker first held a knife to Joseph’s throat before stabbing Abigail in the back of the neck.
Last week, Abigail was able to provide police with a detailed description of the attacker. Although she has been unable to speak since the attack, she was able to communicate with police officers by mouthing words and blinking.
It emerged that detectives were expected to show a photograph of Mr Cazaly to Abigail Witchalls as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Mr Cazaly had driven to Scotland where he was admitted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness on April 28 after he had apparently taken an overdose of painkillers.
A 25-year-old man has been questioned in relation to the case but was later released without being charged.
