Two workmen and a motorist killed in M6 crash

Two workmen and a female motorist have been killed in an accident on the M6 motorway in Cheshire.

The accident happened around 9:30pm last night between junction 20 and 19 of the motorway. A silver Honda Civic, which was travelling southbound, collided with a coned area where work was taking place.

The driver of the Civic, a 31-year-old woman from Fulwood in Preston was killed, along with the two workmen – a 41-year-old from Runcorn and a 48-year-old from Warrington.

Police said that the two men were traffic management operatives who were completing a closure on the M6 southbound in preparation for repairs to the central barrier. They were two of a number of teams who were working on the motorway at the time of the accident.

The motorway was closed for several hours following the accident, but reopened again around 3:20am.

The names of the deceased have not been released, but it has been reported that police family liaison officers are with the families.

Cheshire police are appealing for anyone who saw the Honda Civic prior to the crash or witnessed the collision to contact them on: 01244 350000.

Part Of M25 Closed Following Fatal Accident
One person has died in an accident involving several vehicles on the M25. Part of the motorway is currently closed in both directions. Three others have been taken to hospital following the accident which occurred at 1.50am on Tuesday, according to Essex Police.

Driver Arrested After Car Crashes Into Train At Level Crossing
An investigation has been launched into an incident in which a car collided with a train in Berkshire. British Transport Police have confirmed a car crashed into a train at a level crossing at Datchet in Berkshire at about 06:05 this morning. It is understood that the 67-year-old female driver was not injured in the collision.

Labour Life Peer Jailed Over Fatal Crash
A Labour life peer has been jailed for 12 weeks for colliding with another car on a motorway just minutes after he was sending and receiving text messages. Lord Ahmed, 51, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, which resulted in the death of Slovakian Martyn Gombar, 28, on the M1 near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Christmas day 2007.
