Series of car bombs explode in Baghdad

A series of car bomb attacks in and around Baghdad have reportedly killed over 20 people and injured at least 50 others.

The blasts, which were targeted at Iraqi security forces, took place in two separate areas of the city and appeared to be co-ordinated attacks.

Police said that four suicide car bombings exploded in the Adhamiya district in the north of the city, in the most serious of the attacks. Civilians, soliders and policemen were reported to be among the dead.

There were also reports of two roadside bombs in the town of Dora in the south of the city.

Three more car bombs also later exploded in the town of Madain, where there were recent reports that a number of Shia Muslims had been taken hostage by Sunni gunmen. Over 50 bodies were found in the Tigris River, but Iraqi forces later said they found no evidence of any of the residents being taken hostage in the town.

The attacks come just one day after the new government of Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari was announced. However, in spite of intensive negotations, some posts in the new Iraqi Cabinet have yet to be filled.
