Police arrest man in Abigail case
A 25-year-old Surrey man has been arrested in connection with the attack of Abigail Witchalls, police have confirmed.
Surrey police confirmed that the man had been arrested last night, but said that the arrest was “only one line of inquiry” and said that police were still following up other information.
Earlier yesterday, police said that they had received hundreds of calls regarding the case, after Abigail provided police with a detailed description of her attacker.
The 26-year-old was attacked in Little Bookham, Surrey, last week as she returned home from a mothers and toddlers meeting with her 21-month-old son Joseph. Her attacker followed her down a lane and first held a knife to her son’s throat before grabbing Abigail and stabbing her in the back in of the neck. The attacker made no attempt to rob her.
Although she was left paralysed after the attack, Abigail was able to provide police with information about the attack during two days of interviews, during which she communicated with police by mouthing words or blinking. Abigail was able to give police a description of her attacker.
She remains in St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south London, where her condition is said to be improving.
Last Friday, a 28-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested in connection with the case, although both have now been ruled out of the investigation, following Abigail’s description.
Abigail is expected to help police construct an e-fit of her attacker today, as well as study pictures of vehicles in order to provide more information about the blue car her attacker drove.
Police have described Abigail’s attacker as “an extremely dangerous offender”.
