Over 50 bodies found in Iraq river

Over fifty bodies have been found in the Tigris River, south of Baghdad, Iraq President Jalal Talabani has said.

The discovery follows reports that Sunni insurgents seized a number of Shia Muslims as hostages from the town of Madain.

However, Iraqi forces who entered the town earlier this week following the reports allegedly found no evidence of any of the town’s residents being taken hostage.

Mr Talabani said that the government had the names of those who were killed as well as the names of the “criminals who committed these crimes”. He also said that it was “not true” that hostages had not been taken from Madain.

It was reported that women and children were among the bodies recovered from the Tigris.

Another 19 bodies were also found at a football stadium in Haditha, northwest of Baghdad. They are believed to be those of Iraqi soldiers, who were reportedly intercepted by insurgents while travelling to their base.
