Billie-Jo murder retrial starts
The retrial of Sion Jenkins, the man accused of murdering his foster daughter Billie-Jo, has begun at the Old Bailey with graphic descriptions of how the teenager died.
The teenager died after being hit on the head in the family home in Hastings, East Sussex on February 15, 1997. She had been painting the patio doors in the house when she was attacked.
On the opening day of the retrial, prosecutor Nicolas Hillard told the court that Billie-Jo had been struck on the head “at least five times” with what he described as “forceful blows” with an iron bar.
Mr Hillard told the jury that Billie-Jo had been murdered in her home, a place “where she ought to have been safe”.
Mr Jenkins (47) of Aberystwyth, mid Wales, was given a life sentence seven years ago for the murder of thirteen-year-old Billie-Jo.
Mr Jenkins, a former deputy headteacher, had denied murdering Billie-Jo. Last July he was released on bail, following a ruling by the Court of Appeal, ordering a new trial to be held. The Court of Appeal ruled that Mr Jenkins’ conviction was unsafe, following the emergence of new forensic evidence.
The trial continues.
