Liberal Democrats promise ‘fair’ healthcare
The Liberal Democrats have unveiled a series of pledges aimed at tackling “key unfair charges” in the NHS.
The commitments unveiled by the party today included: proposals to scrap charges for dental and eye check-ups; the introduction of free personal care for the elderly; and a review of prescriptions charges.
Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Sir Menzies Campbell, standing in for Charles Kennedy, who is taking a break from election duties following the birth of his son, said fairness was a “priority” for the party.
He also said that the party would introduce free eye and dental checks because “prevention is as important as cure – and charges for tests discourage people from taking them”. He said: “Liberal Democrats believe the principles of the National Health Service are as relevant today as they were when it was first founded. A universal service, a common good funded through general taxation; delivering health care to all citizens; based on need, not on what a person can afford; and free at the point of delivery. It’s time to reinvigorate the founding principles of fairness in the NHS.”
The Liberal Democrats are expected to launch their manifesto tomorrow.
