Crunch time for London 2012 Olympics bid

London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games is under the spotlight today as members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission begin arriving in the city.

The 13-member Evaluation Commission will spend four days inspecting sites, facilities and amenities around London and examining plans drawn up by 'London 2012', the group coordinating the bid and chaired by Gold Medal winner Sebastian Coe (now Lord Coe).

During their stay the inspectors will be guests at a special dinner with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and will meet with Prime Minister Tony Blair.

A positive evaluation is crucial if London 2012, facing competition from New York, Madrid, Moscow and the favourite Paris, is to have any hope of success.

The commission's report will be published in May.
