Former PSNI chief appointed as HM Chief Inspector
Former PSNI Chief Constable, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, has been appointed as Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary.
Sir Ronnie was appointed as one of Her Majesty's inspectors in 2002. He will succeed Sir Keith Povey, who became Chief Inspector in September 2001.
Commenting on Sir Ronnie's appointment, Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, said: "I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sir Ronnie Flanagan as Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary. Sir Ronnie has a proven record of operational and managerial achievement at the highest level of the police service, gaining excellent experience as the last Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary. His long involvement in policing – both as an officer and as an Inspector of Constabulary – means he is well placed to advise Ministers, the Home Office and other tripartite partners on policing issues."
Sir Ronnie joined the RUC in 1970, serving as both a constable and then sergeant, he was promoted to inspector in 1976 and was a Detective Inspector in Special Branch in 1982. Rising though the senior ranks to Chief Superintendent, he was appointed RUC Chief Constable in 1996 – the same year he received an OBE. A knighthood followed two years later. He retired from the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2002 and was appointed HM Inspector of Constabulary for London and East Wigan.
Sir Ronnie's appointment to the £189,000-a-year post of HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary is expected to last three years.

Chief Inspector of Prisons Appointed
Nicholas Hardwick has been appointed Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, the Justice Secretary confirmed today . Mr Hardwick, currently the Chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, was selected as the preferred candidate to succeed Dame Anne Owers.

Five Arrested After Man Stabbed To Death In Leeds
Police have arrested five people after a man was stabbed to death in Leeds. 27 year old Christopher Wade died after being stabbed near to the Butterbowl public house, in Butterbowl Drive, Farnley on Tuesday. A 23 year old man and a 16 year old male have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police Search Tunnels For Nottingham Murder Victim
Police investigating the murder of a 21-year-old man in Nottingham in January 2014 are to search tunnels beneath a former cigarette factory which were destroyed in a fire. Police are continuing to search for the remains of Bogdan Mawrocki, who went missing from his home in Radford at the start of 2014.

A court has been told that a teenager who beat his mother to death with a hammer before setting fire to their home was inspired by a plot in Coronation Street. Daniel Bartlam, then aged 14, struck his mother Jacqueline Bartlam,47, with a claw hammer seven times after watching the soap's character John Stape kill his victim in a similar manner.
