Four Guantanamo Britons released without charge

Four British nationals released from the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay have been released from police custody without charge following questioning.

The men were reunited with their families on Wednesday evening, but will be monitored under an agreement reached with the US authorities who believe that the four pose a "security risk".

Feroz Abbasi, 24, Richard Belmar, 25, and Martin Mubanga, 32, are from London, while Moazzam Begg, 36, is from Birmingham. All appeared to be in reasonably good condition and human rights groups have welcomed their release from custody.

A previous group of British detainees are pursuing a legal case against the US authorities for unlawful treatment while in custody in the US.

The father of Moazzam Begg said that nothing had been proved despite "hundreds" of interrogation sessions in Guantanamo. Azmat Begg said that his son was a "God fearing sort of person" who was "always doing good". Mr Begg said that his son, who had done nothing wrong, was determined to fight for the people held in Guantanamo who his son said were definitely not terrorists.

Earlier, a spokesperson for the US Defence Department at the Pentagon had maintained that the men were considered "a terrorist threat".

Today, Mr Begg was reunited with his wife and young family.
