Poll reveals fears over extending pub opening hours
A poll has found that almost 70% of people believe that violence will increase in Britain, if pubs are allowed to extend their opening hours.
Polling organisation ICM, conducted a survey of 1,024 people across Britain, on behalf of BBC Breakfast. The survey found that 67% of people questioned believed that anti-social behaviour would increase if extended opening hours were introduced. Sixty-two per cent also believed that the flexible drinking hours proposed by the government would make Britain a worse place to live. However, the poll found that 46% of people thought the current 11pm closing time was out of date, compared with 50% who believed it was not.
The ICM poll found that young people were more inclined to think the extended pub opening hours were a good idea with more than one in three 18-34 year-olds saying that more relaxed drinking laws would make Britain a better place to live. However, four out of five pensioners believed that it would make things worse.
The survey follows the unveiling of government proposals last week to clamp down on Britain's 'binge-drinking' culture.
The new measures include plans to bar persistent public order offenders from bars and pubs in a specific area; extending fixed penalty notices for pubs which serve under-age drinkers; and the introduction of 'alcohol disorder zones' to cover problem areas where anti-social drinking takes place.
