Baghdad Shia mosque bombing kills worshippers
An attack on a Shia Muslim mosque has killed at least 14 people and injured 40 others in Baghdad.
The car bomb exploded as worshippers who had been celebrating the festival of Eid were leaving the al-Taf mosque in south-western Baghdad.
The attack has been the latest atrocity perpetrated by insurgents who have apparently rallied to a call by radical militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. In the recorded message Zarqawi denounces Shia Muslims, who he accuses of attacking Sunni Muslims, and says that the fight against the US led forces in Iraq could last "months or years".
The tension between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in Iraq has increased in the run up to the elections on January 30.
One senior Shia Muslim cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani recently backed the election by calling for his followers to vote, however some Sunni Muslim leaders have urged their followers not to take part in the elections.
The elections will return 275 members to an Iraqi national assembly, and elect members to sit on the 18 regional assemblies.
The US authorities have offered a $25 million reward for Zarqawi whose group is said to be linked with al-Qaeda.
