Listing cargo vessel makes port safely
A major rescue operation off Scotland involving a listing cargo vessel has been stood down.
The Latvian registered vessel Sea Fox got into difficulties when the cargo of timber shifted and the vessel developed a 50 degree list.
However, the vessel en route to Liverpool from Rega with a crew of 10 on board, was eventually able to make port under her own power.
With Coastguard concerned at the safety of the vessel in worsening sea conditions and force ten gale forecast, Barra RNLI Lifeboat was launched to stand by the vessel as she made her way to the nearest port.
This morning at around 09:45am the Captain of the ship contacted Clyde Coastguard to advise them that his cargo had shifted and that his vessel, which was 13 miles west of Tiree, was listing heavily to port in large seas. On behalf of the vessel, Clyde Coastguard declared the incident a "Mayday".
The crew of the vessel attempted to resolve the problem, but in worsening weather the Coastguard Emergency Towing Vessel Anglican Prince was ordered to proceed to the area and the RNLI Lifeboat at Barra was asked to launch and stand by the cargo vessel as a precautionary measure.
During the incident three rescue helicopters were also placed on standby.
The vessel will remain at Castle Bay until marine surveyors have completed an inspection.
