Asda cuts fuel prices as pump war heats up

One of Britain's leading supermarket chains, Asda, has sparked a potential petrol price war, after slashing 3p off the cost of a litre of unleaded petrol.

The Wal-Mart owned group said the price reduction was in response to an over-supply in the market. It will mean that unleaded petrol will now cost 76.9p per litre. However, Asda have stated that the reduction will not apply to diesel.

Rival supermarket chain, Tesco, have already responded to the move and have pledged to cut its petrol prices as well.

The price cuts come almost a month after Morrisons ignited a price war at the pumps by reducing the price of unleaded petrol by 3.5p to 79.9p per litre.

Analysts have said that the fall in oil prices after the record high levels last year was probably the cause of the reductions.

Asda have echoed those claims, with a spokesman stating that an over-supply of gasoline in the market had driven international prices down.
