Three bodies exhumed in GP investigation

Post mortem examinations have begun on the bodies of two elderly men exhumed by detectives investigating a former GP charged with murder.

The pensioners are understood to have been patients of Dr Howard Martin, who is currently awaiting trial, accused of murdering a patient. A further body is to be exhumed as police continue their inquiries.

Police arrived at two cemeteries in south west Durham around midnight on Tuesday, January 4, to excavate two graves. The exhumed bodies were taken to the mortuary at Bishop Auckland General Hospital.

A spokesman for Durham Police said that the bodies had been exhumed in order to attempt to discover the exact cause of death. Police confirmed that a third exhumation at another cemetery will take place.

Dr Martin, aged 70, who now lives in Penmaenmawr, Conwy, North Wales, has denied administering a fatal dose of morphine to Harry Gittins, 74, of Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. The body of Mr Gittins, who suffered from cancer, was exhumed last year.

In August last year, Dr Martin, who has surgeries in Shildon, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe, was charged with murder. Currently on conditional bail, Dr Martin who has pleaded not guilty is due to stand trial at Teeside Crown Court in March.
