UK Internet connectivity figures continue to rise
The latest monthly update to the survey of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the UK shows that between October 2003 and October 2004 there was a 4.3% increase in the number of active subscriptions to the Internet.
In the month between September and October 2004 the index increased by 0.3% to 132.4, and has now increased for two consecutive months, but is still a little below the peak index figure of 133.1 in March 2004.
Permanent Internet connections continued to increase their market share and made up 36% of all subscriptions in October 2004, up from 34.4% in September 2004. There was a year-on-year increase of 89.6% for subscriptions for permanent connections, with a monthly increase in October of 5.1%.
The market share for permanent connections at 36% of all connections compares with a market share of just 19.8% a year before. Permanent, or 'always-on', connections now have more subscribers than any of the dial-up access plans.
The increase in the market share for permanent connections largely reflects the marketing and uptake of new broadband products and the continuing increase in availability of broadband services. However, dial-up still dominates the overall number of subscriptions, despite its share dropping to 64% of all subscriptions in October 2004.
The number of dial-up connections reached its peak in February 2002 but has continued to decline with a year on year fall to October 2004 of 16.8% and there was a decrease from September to October 2004 of 2.3%.
