Fire and rescue service to get overhaul
New research to help the fire and rescue service cope more effectively with modern emergency scenarios like fires in high rise buildings was published today by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
The review - the first of its kind in 60 years - looked at the physical challenges facing modern firefighters and how techniques, equipment and even buildings, could be designed to make their task easier and safer.
The Chief Fire Inspector, Sir Graham Meldrum, who chairs the Building Disaster Assessment Group (BDAG), said: "This is innovative research which will inform and improve many aspects of fire and rescue service work including the use and design of equipment, operating procedures and how they are employed in the built environment.
"The issues arising are inter-related and cannot be considered in isolation so continued commitment from our stakeholders is now vital.
"The fire and rescue service will work with representatives from business and community safety to drive forward the changes necessary."
Today’s research document was undertaken by the BDAG which in turn was set up as a result of the September 11 attacks in the United States. It is made up of senior firefighters and stakeholders including health and safety experts and union representatives.
