Plans passed for £47m link road through valley

Despite a concerted campaign by environmentalists, plans to build a controversial £47 million link road in southern England have been passed.

Friends of the Earth said that the Bexhill to Hastings road through the scenic Combe Haven Valley in East Sussex would on the contrary add to congestion and increase pollution.

Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said that the £1.6 billion package for local transport in England in 2005-6 which is funding the disputed road, will allow local authorities to "continue to invest in improvements to their local transport systems".

An alliance of transport and environmentalist groups has argued that while the road will not run through one area of Combe Haven Valley which has been designated as an area of 'special scientific interest', they maintain that wildlife and landscape in the valley will undoubtedly be damaged.

The alliance has offered alternatives to easing traffic problems, such as improved public transport services and more provision for walking and cycling.

Mike Turner, from Hastings Friends of the Earth, said: "The Combe Haven Valley is a beautiful and tranquil landscape that could be lost forever."

Campaigners will meet with local people later this week outside Hastings to view the planned route of the new road.
