Ukraine political crisis continues to deepen

Ukraine's Parliament has today passed a motion of no confidence in the country's Prime Minister.

The vote of no confidence followed allegations that the Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovych, was involved in election fraud.

Two hundred and twenty MPs voted in favour of sacking Mr Yanukovych and supported calls to set up of an interim government. For his part, Mr Yanukovych called on the Supreme Court to disregard the controversial second round of the presidential election.

International observers from the US and European Union have agreed that the election fell 'far short of democratic norms'.

In the disputed election held on November 21, Mr Yanukovych beat the opposition's Viktor Yushchenko. But following complaints from the opposition party of vote mismanagement both leaders agreed to hold talks - no resolution was found.

The country's Supreme Court met on Monday to consider the allegations, while thousands of Mr Yuschenko's supporters took to the streets in protest.

Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and his Lithuanian counterpart Valdas Adamkus along with Russian official Boris Gryzlov and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana arrived in Kiev today to hold separate meetings with Ukrainian political leaders.

The Ukraine's outgoing President, Leonid Kuchma, last night met with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana ahead of today's rounds of talks.

Mr Kuchma told an economic conference today that he had already suggested holding a fresh election. But he dismissed talk of holding a repeat election, as he said "simply re-running the 21 November vote would be unconstitutional".

"Where in the world do they have a third round of elections? A re-run of the election is a farce," he said.

Reports today suggest that the results of the Supreme Court's enquiry could be relaeased soon.
