New year price rise for rail travel

A sharp 4% rise in rail fares for UK passengers was announced today.

The new prices will take effect next year and while all season tickets and saver fares will go up by 4%, rail firms' advance bookings and cheap day returns will increase by between 2% and 7.2%.

Confirmation of the above price rise linked to inflation coincides with news that many passengers have not been able to book ahead to obtain cheap advance tickets for Christmas because of problems over the scheduling of work on the rail network.

However, Director General of the Association of Train Operating Companies, George Muir assured passengers that they would be able to make advance seven-day bookings by the end of the week.

In an interview for BBC Breakfast he said that the government had poured huge sums of money into the rail industry in recent years, with £7 billion spent on the west coast main line alone.

Mr Muir added "Money is going into railways across the whole country - we are step by step delivering things to passengers."

Shadow Home Secretary Tim Yeo criticised the government's failure to bring about reductions in train fares.
