Business leaders have 'key role' to play countering terror threats

The head of the British secret service has warned business leaders that they should be more aware of the threat of terrorism, including electronic attacks.

Addressing the Confederation of British Business for the first time, Director-General of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller, said that business had a "key role" to play to counter the "current and real" threat posed by terrorists against UK interests.

"There might be major attacks like Madrid earlier this year. They might be on a smaller scale," she said.

"The terrorists are inventive, adaptable and patient; their planning includes a wide range of methods to attack us."

Despite being damaged since 9/11, Al Qaida and other terror groups retain the capability to strike western targets, she said.

Mrs Manningham-Buller encouraged business to broaden its thinking on security issues.

"A narrow definition of corporate security including the threats of crime and fraud should be widened to include terrorism and the threat of electronic attack," she added.

The MI5 chief said that security should become part of the business agenda in the same way as health and safety, and should not be left to specialists. Businesses should set up "simple and effective business continuity plans" that should be tested and reviewed at regular intervals.

The Director-General added that the MI5 website has been redeveloped to provide clear information on the threat and how to protect commercial interests. Further initiatives are being planned.
