Blair urged to lobby new US president on green policies
Prime Minister Tony Blair must persuade President Bush to develop more environmentally friendly policies, the Lib Dems have said.
With Kerry's wthdrawal from the race this afternoon, Lib Dem environment spokesperson Norman Baker challenged Mr Blair to "fully engage" with the president on the issue of the environment.
He went to accuse the Bush administration of "ignoring" the threat posed by climate change.
In a Parliamentary debate on ‘UK relations with the USA’, Mr Baker said: “Tony Blair must now make it an urgent priority to press for American action on climate change. His first phone call today should start ‘Congratulations on your victory Mr President. Can I talk to you about climate change?’
“If we are to succeed in bringing the US into an international agreement on climate change, Tony Blair and his international counterparts must look beyond Kyoto to a fairer system of contraction and convergence."
He added: “By allowing every country its fair share of carbon use, this system puts paid to American excuses for not signing up.”

A report launched today concludes that the effects of 'dangerous' levels of climate change are likely to occur over coming decades. It offers little hope that CO2 emissions can be kept in check, and that given rapid global warming, meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet will cause sea levels to rise by seven metres.
