West Yorkshire project wins Prime Minister design awards

The A650 Bingley Relief Road project in West Yorkshire has won a top design excellence award.

At this year's Prime Minister's Better Public Building Awards, the Highways Agency's 4.5km project became the first civil engineering project ever to win the prestigious award at a ceremony held last night.

The project is credited with cutting traffic congestion in Bingley by more than half.

In addition to the construction of 26 structures, the £48 million road bypassing Bingley town centre, presented a tough challenge to both designers and contractors during construction. Taking a route between an electrified railway and a canal, in part the road traverses a peat bog designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and cuts through a major landfill site.

Alistair Darling, Transport Secretary, said the project demonstrates the construction team's "excellent work".

"The government is committed to investing in Britain's road network, tackling congestion and improving quality of life - this ambitious project is example of what can be achieved."

Now in their fourth year, the awards recognise excellence in design quality and procurement practices of publicly funded building schemes.

A record 137 projects were entered for consideration this year.
