Drug addict killer of British backpacker jailed for life

A 32-year-old drug addict has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a British tourist in Australia two years ago.

Ian Previte was convicted of robbery with personal violence and murder at Bundaberg Supreme Court today. He was sentenced to life for murder and 10 years for the robbery charge.

The court found that Caroline Stuttle, 19, was pushed off Burnett River bridge in Bundaberg, Queensland, on April 10 2002 after Previte attempted to snatch her handbag from her. She suffered a fractured skull and a severed spine in the fall, and was killed instantly.

The court heard secret tape recordings of Previte boasting about carrying out the murder. The court rejected Previte's defence that he was an attention seeker making idle claims.

Caroline, from York, had been backpacking across the continent during her gap year – having been accepted to do a psychology course at Manchester University.
