Disabled woman dies in Manchester housefire

A disabled woman has died and her carer hospitalised following a housefire in Greater Manchester this morning.

Alison Cross, a 53-year-old woman with mobility difficulties, died at around 10.15am on Friday after emergency services attended a fire at her house on Springside Road in Bury.

It is believed her carer, who had a key for the house, arrived just before 9.30am and let herself in. She realised there was a fire and asked a passer-by to call the emergency services.

Ms Cross was taken to Fairfield General Hospital where she later died. Her carer was also taken to hospital with respiratory difficulties from smoke inhalation but her condition is not thought to be serious.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated but it is not thought to be suspicious.
