Employment rate sees quarterly rise

The number of people in employment has increased by 10,000 over the last quarter and the jobless rate has fallen again, according to labour market statistics published this month.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) study found there were 28.39 million people in employment in the three months to August 2004, up 221,000 on a year earlier. The number of job vacancies, not seasonally adjusted, upped to 662,800 – a rise of 55,700 from a year ago.

Over the year to June, production industries workforce jobs were down 91,000, service sector jobs up 193,000 and other industries up 97,000.

But while the report found that the numbers of job vacancies were up over the year, the working age employment rate was down 0.1% to 74.7%.

The unemployment rate was 4.7%, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter. The number of unemployed people fell by 51,000 over the quarter. Around 1.4 million were registered unemployed in the three months to August 2004, down 105,000 from a year earlier.

The claimant count also saw a minor fall of 200 over the previous month – total claimants now stands at 834,000.

Minister for Work, Jane Kennedy, welcomed the new statistics which reflected how the success of the economy had moved more people from welfare and into work.

She added: "Our aim now is to build on this success by extending employment opportunity to all. Jobcentre Plus, together with programmes like the New Deal, have contributed to historically low levels of unemployment and are increasingly making a difference for other people on benefits."
