UK scientists handed £147.5m cash boost

UK scientists involved in medical research, super-fast computers and clean energy technology have been handed a £147.5 million cash boost today.

A multi-million pound cash injection will go into two particle accelerators - ISIS and Diamond Light Source - which produce light beams and particles of exceptional energy to enable scientists to probe deep into the internal structure of different materials.

Up to £120 million will go into phase II of Diamond Light Source – the largest science facility to be built in the UK for nearly 30 years and will be the size of five football fields. On target to open in 2007, the facility will provide infra-red, ultra-violet and X-rays beams of exceptional brightness.

The rest of the cash boost will go towards new hi tech instruments at ISIS – the world's brightest pulsed 'spallation' neutron source that fires protons at a target releasing neutron beams which are then used to probe the internal structure of material.

Officially opening the first section of the Diamond machine tunnel, Science minister Lord Sainsbury said: "World-class scientific research is of key importance for UK prosperity and creates technologies that benefit us all. These new world-class scientific facilities will enable UK scientists and engineers to make exciting discoveries.

"The ability to look deeper into matter is fundamental to achieving new breakthroughs in many areas from medical treatment and drugs to understanding the origins of our planet."

Professor Gerd Materlik, Chief Executive at Diamond Light Source said that the facility would provide researchers from the UK and abroad with "state-of-the-art instrumentation, cutting-edge analytical techniques and support services for the next 30 years or more".
