27 die in Egyptian holiday resort bombings

Up to 27 people have been killed following bombings at three Egyptian holiday resorts popular with Israeli tourists.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw condemned the attacks which occurred close to the Israeli border at the Hilton Hotel in Taba, and the more southerly resort of Nuweiba which lies on the coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

The Taba blast was the bigger of the two and it is thought claimed the lives of 25 people. It has been reported that the building was rocked by two explosions – one was a suicide bomber and another was detonated after a car rammed into the building.

Jack Straw said: "I was shocked to hear of the terrible blasts in Taba and the Nuweiba area in Egypt last night which have killed and injured so many. I offer my sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have died and to those who have been injured.

"We are in close touch with the Egyptian and Israeli authorities. Staff from the British Embassy in Cairo are on the ground providing consular assistance."

Israeli authorities have said that the bombings bear the hallmarks of an Al Qaeda operation.
